It had been a solid eight months since I’d been on a date. Even longer since I’d been in a relationship. It wasn’t something that bothered me, really. I’d never crossed paths with the right woman, and work kept me too busy to mind. In short, it had been a long time since I’d had this much fun.

Addy was, hands down, the most responsive woman I’d ever been around. Even before we’d slept together, she seemed to send signals with her blushes and meaningful looks. I couldn’t help but wonder if she knew how everything she felt lay plain in her eyes.

I wouldn’t go telling her any state secrets, but I’d trust her with anything else.

As soon as the thought crossed my mind, I cursed inwardly. This wasn’t a good time to go falling for anyone—and I certainly never expected to fall for my neighbor.

But I’d already set the game, and Addy was too much of a temptation for me not to finish it.

I knelt beside her chair, watching as she trembled. “Daddy stuff, huh? Want to tell me what you mean by that?” I was carefully watching her face, despite the fact that she’d swiveled away from me.

“I don’t know.”

“Sure you do.” The words were said calmly, casually even, but there was an insistence to my tone.

She shrugged irritably. “You know. The Daddy stuff you were talking about earlier. Needing someone to ‘help me’ and ‘protect me’ and all that.” The more she talked, the more bitterness seeped into her words.

That alone told me more than her statement ever could. “Ah, I see. But I didn’t call it ‘Daddy stuff,’ Addison. You did.”

She rolled her eyes toward me. “Well, isn’t it?”

I felt my palm itch once more and had to remind myself she wasn’t mine to correct. I cleared my throat and took a deep, calming breath before answering. “That depends on who you ask, I suppose.”

The corner of her mouth lifted, but it was more a sneer than a smile. “Didn’t I just ask you?”

I cleared my throat and pinned her with my sternest glare. “You’re pushing me, Addison. I don’t know what’s happened to get you into this mood, or what I’ve done to deserve your snark, but if you keep at it, you’re not going to like where you end up.”

The little brat rolled her eyes right in front of me. “What?” Her tone was almost taunting. “You’ll spank me?” Then she looked me right in the eye and there was no mistaking the challenge there.

Huh, is that what’s on her mind? Isn’t she still sporting my handprints under that dress of hers?

“No, I’m not going to spank you, Addy.”

The flash of triumph was immediate, and her lips were curving.

“I would have to ask you to leave.”

As my words sank in, her expression deflated. Her eyes widened and her lips turned into a pout. Then those violet eyes misted over. I’d never seen such a sad face.

“What?” she asked in a near-whisper.

“You heard me,” I responded, compassionate, but firm.
